The Family
Here at the Dahlia Shed it is a family affair. From field prep to planting and picking everyone is involved. Amy a stay at home mom has always loved growing flowers and as the family has grown so has the field. Jesse who has a day job is always willing to lend a hand to fixing irrigation and helping tie dahlias. Jarrett our oldest when not in school is an excellent tractor driver and transports the flowers from the field to garage to be processed. Brystol loves to explore the fields and has become a good florist and does most of our posy vases. Trenton our youngest is all hands on when a tractor is involved.
Amy's love of flowers and farming has been a lifelong passion. Growing up on a farm and down the road from her Aunts greenhouse operation she was exposed at a very early age. In high school learning design and about flowers in her Agriculture education classes and participating in the School's FFA Chapter was a great foundation. Dahlias became a passion when Jesse's grandfather exposed her to a few tubers and a few plants quickly turned into over 5500 last season.
Jesse and Amy both grew up on a farm and know how important it is to give that same experience to their children. To all of our customers we thank you for your continued support and look forward to offering more varieties of flowers in the future.
The Farm
The Dahlia Shed is a specialty cut flower farmer located miles from Newport RI. The bulk of the flowers we grow go to florists who seek out high quality product for their events. We are known for our excellent quality dahlias but offer over 35 varieties of specialty cut flowers. Our availability list goes out weekly starting in June on Shopify. We do not ship our flowers farm pick up only.
We are not a pick your own cut flower farm. Our fields are closed to the public and only open during our farm hosted workshops. The farm started with a small retail self service wishing well stand with sunflowers, annuals and hydrangea arrangements 14 years ago. That stand has been upgraded several times. Retail customers can shop our self service stand and find pre made bouquets, posy vases, bunched flowers and or build your own bouquet options. We accept cash or check only. Our abundant season is July- October but spring and early summer flowers are available starting in April. Check Instagram at Dahlia Shed for up to date information on opening and hours in the Spring. Our Summer hours staring in July we are Open Wednesday - Sunday 9am to 6pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
In the winter we are busy dividing dahlia tubers in time for our January 1st dahlia tuber sale. Log on to our website January 1 at 9am EST to shop our dahlia tuber inventory. Head over to the shop tab to find out more. Our tubers are shipped out late winter by growing zone when the risk of freezing in transit is gone.
